Year 1 Curriculum
Key Stage 1 – ages 5-7 years old.
Year 1
Year 1 is the first year of Key Stage 1 and the children begin to follow the National Curriculum.
This consists of core subjects:
- English
- Maths
- Science
Foundation subjects:
- History
- Geography
- Art and Design
- Design and Technology
- Computing
- Music
- Physical Education
- Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education.
- We also follow the agreed Sunderland syllabus for Religious Education.
In Year 1 we follow a ‘theme based’ approach to the curriculum this means that wherever possible we group our subjects around a theme using cross-curricular links. Throughout the school year, we teach six different themes. The themes we choose are planned around interests and needs of the children and areas of the National Curriculum we must cover. We want to make sure our curriculum is rich, broad and balanced. There is a strong emphasis on learning through experiences both in and beyond the classroom, inspiring our children to become lifelong learners.
